Anela Mosqueda

Here is a little about herself:

Anela is a four time scholarship winner! She says "I am very honored to be a chosen recipient of the HAHPERD scholarship."

I have been dancing as long as I remember myself- since I was 4 years old. I have done jazz, tap, contemporary, hula, but the love of my life is classical ballet. I have been blessed to dance in my high school, have after-school dance rehearsals, catch a bus to a class at my ballet studio (Hawaii State Ballet) and later have a rehearsal there until nighttime. The times when I was able to teach dance to my peers and assist with beginner ballet classes for small children I found especially rewarding. I loved every moment of my journey, and it was only natural for me to continue as a ballet dance major at UNCSA where I was accepted this year.

I am grateful to the HAHPERD scholarship for helping me to pursue my dream. In the future I would like to become an educator and be able to share my love and knowledge of dance with children and adults and pass on the opportunities that we presented to me.

HAHPERD 2024-2025 Deloris M. Curtis Undergraduate Travel Grant Recipient

Andrew-Joshua Kaneta was selected as the 2024-2025 Deloris M. Curtis Undergraduate Travel Grant Recipient. In addition to this HAHPERD award, he was also named as a 2025 SHAPE America Undergraduate Major of the Year. Congratulations Andrew! Here is a media clip about his award.

Andrew-Joshua wrote a letter about his experience, here is an insert from it:

"I learned a ton from the sessions I attended, from creative and fun lessons to instructional strategies. There was so much information being shared between like minded people and it was really cool to be in that space and to meet others who share the same passion. I especially enjoyed the Hawaii social where I got to meet others who made the vast journey to the East Coast and were just as excited to be there as I was. In addition to meeting new people that were close to home, I got to meet many people who were not. In fact, it was really cool to meet 2025 Elementary PE Teacher of the Year Coach Gelardi from Queens who I often get ideas from when I come across his instructional videos on social media."

"One of the biggest highlights of the trip for me was definitely the Major of the Year ceremony. As the 2025 Physical Education major of the year at UH Manoa, I was able to be physically recognized at the conference. Without this opportunity, I would not have known the significance of this award and how big of an impact it is on my future career. I was even able to participate in a short interview where I was asked to explain how it felt to be a recipient of that award and what it meant to me. I could only think of two things when answering. The first is how there is still so much room for me to grow in all aspects of education and that I am motivated to live up to my potential. The second is that I couldn’t have done it without the motivation, encouragement, and support given to me by my peers and loved ones."
